“No More Land Concessions: Cross River State Governor Unveils Bold Stand Against Cameroon”

Date:

No More Land Cession to Cameroon, Declares Cross River State Governor, Otu

Cross River State Governor, Senator Bassey Otu, has expressed a firm, unequivocal stand against the cession of state’s territory to Cameroon. Addressing the National Assembly Steering Committee (NASS), Governor Otu emphasized that no portion of Cross River land would be ceded in the future under any circumstances.

Otu’s Strong Message to the NASS Committee

In his interaction with the NASS Committee, Governor Otu emphasized the state’s steadfast stance in upholding its territorial integrity. He expressed his discontent over earlier negotiations, which led to the cession of parts of Cross River to Cameroon.

Senator Otu stated, “Our land is our pride, it’s inseparable from our identity. We will not tolerate further cession of Cross River land to Cameroon or any other entity.”

Previous Cessions: A Thorny Issue

Cross River State, sharing borders with Cameroon, has seen several of its territories ceded to the neighboring country over the years. The cessions, often carried out under the pretext of fulfilling international obligations, have not sat well with the local populace, leading to dissatisfaction and unrest.

Reflecting on these land disputes, political analyst Joseph Ndifon noted, “Cross River State has borne the brunt of these territorial adjustments. The state’s indignation is justifiable.”

Implications: A Firm Commitment to Preserve Territorial Sovereignty

Governor Otu’s declaration marks a potential change in how Cross River will handle its territorial disputes with Cameroon. It also underlines a growing determination to assert and preserve the state’s territorial sovereignty.

Political affairs expert, Adaobi Mba, weighs on the subject stating, “Governor Otu’s assertion signifies a new chapter in Cross River’s approach to territorial claims. It’s a testament to the state’s dedication to upholding its territorial sovereignty.”

Looking Ahead: Paving the Way for Constructive Dialogue

Whilst the Governor’s firm stance is set to redefine Cross River’s stance on territorial negotiations, it also sends a message to the Federal Government about the state’s refusal to accept further land concessions.

Dr. Egbe Omoruyi, a regional policy expert, commented, “This is a call to the Federal Government for constructive dialogue and negotiation on territorial disputes. The need for a fair and just resolution is more critical than ever.”

Governor Otu’s firm commitment to safeguard Cross River’s sovereign territory from being ceded is a strong stance that not only sets a precedent but also urges the Federal Government to reconsider their approach to territorial negotiations. The reverberations of this announcement are likely to be felt at the heart of Nigeria’s socio-political sphere, paving the way for a new narrative on territorial rights and sovereignty.
