Rwanda Women’s Volleyball Team Embarks on Journey to Cameroon for African Championship

In a major progression for sports in Rwanda, the national women’s volleyball team set off to Cameroon on Wednesday night. Their mission? To compete in the highly anticipated 2023 Women’s African Volleyball Championship slated to kick off in Yaoundé from August 16.

A Leap Forward: From Training to Continental Competition

The journey from Kigali International Airport to the heartland of Cameroon marks a significant milestone for the team. It’s characterized by not just a change in geographical location but a transition from relentless domestic training to a continental tournament packed with Africa’s most formidable volleyball teams.

The national coach, Paul Bitok, confidently said, “Our team has been working tirelessly in preparation for the championship. We are eager to compete and showcase our skills on a larger African stage.”

Cameroon Welcomes Africa’s Volleyball Elite

Cameroon, known for its rich cultural heritage and sporting prowess, is all set to host the continental volleyball championship. With world-class facilities in place and a shared passion for volleyball, Yaoundé, the capital city, is the perfect stage for this grand tournament.

“We are proud and excited to represent Rwanda at such a paramount event,” said Seraphine Mukantambara, the team captain. “We are here to compete, but also to learn and gain invaluable experience.”

Supporting Talent from the Ground Up

The team’s roster boasts several players from the University of Rwanda, reflecting the institution’s commitment to fostering athletic talent. The university has continuously supported these athletes, nurturing their skills and encouraging their dream to represent the nation at large.

Dr. Charles Murigande, the university chancellor, expressed his confidence in the team, “Our athletes are well-trained, passionate, and eager to perform at the championship. We stand in solidarity with them in this exciting endeavor.”

A Crucial Step in Rwanda’s Volleyball History

Participating in the Women’s African Volleyball Championship is an important chapter in the history of Rwandan women’s volleyball. This high-stakes tournament offers a unique opportunity to measure the team’s capabilities and readiness against top African teams.

Jean-Paul Mvukiyehe, a representative from Rwanda’s sports ministry, highlighted the importance of the event, saying, “We are immensely proud of our team’s commitment and resilience. Their participation in this championship is an inspiration for young athletes back home.”
